For his leadership and valor, First Lieutenant Simonson was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
First Lieutenant Simonson was the pilot of a F9F-2B Panther jet fighter with the Marine Fighter Squadron 311, Marine Air Group 33, 1st Marine Air Wing. On January 2, 1951, while on a combat mission of strafing enemy positions near Kaesong, Korea, his aircraft failed to pull out and crashed into a hill. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
