ARLINGTON, Va. (Sept. 8, 2022) — The weekend of Sept. 17, 2022, the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) Suresnes American Cemetery (SUAC) and Lafayette Escadrille Memorial Cemetery (LEMC), located near Paris, will participate in the new edition of the European Heritage Days dedicated to highlighting the cultural heritage and ensuring the European citizens are aware of its richness. This year’s theme is “sustainable heritage.”

At SUAC, an exhibition called Faces of Suresnes will take place from Sept. 17 22. Over 1,000 photographs of the service members will be displayed next to their headstones at the cemetery and inside the chapel in front of the Walls of the Missing, honoring the men and women who lost their lives and rest forever at SUAC. Reservation are not needed, however, guided tours are available upon request by contacting suresnes@abmc.gov.

At LEMC, from Sept.17 to Sept. 24, the “First World War Aces” exhibition will be displayed in the crypt for visitors to learn more about the American aviators who fought during the Great War. The exhibit was developed in partnership with ONACVG (https://www.onac-vg.fr/). This event pays tribute to the aviators of the Great War. Educational and chronological, the exhibition recalls, through a few panels, the major stages of the development of aviation and the dazzling progress made in this industrial sector during the war. No reservations needed.

“Suresnes American Cemetery and Lafayette Escadrille Memorial Cemetery wanted a way to bring to life the memory of these Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War I and World War II – to put a face to the name and to explain some historical facts,” said Keith Stadler, SUAC and LEMC superintendent. “Educating our audience about what happened to those servicemen and women enables ABMC to carry on Gen. John J. Pershing’s promise that ’time will not dim the glory of their deeds.’ They are still remembered.”
