Aircrew Survival Equipmentman Zempel was a member of Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 1 aboard the aircraft carrier USS BON HOMME RICHARD (CVA-31). On February 27, 1967, he was a crew member of a Seasprite Utility Helicopter (UH-2B) on a rescue mission. As it lifted off the carrier it tilted and fell into the water. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
