Lieutenant Commander Wood was a member of Fighter Squadron 24, Carrier Air Wing 21 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS BON HOMME RICHARD (CVA-31). On June 2, 1967, he was the pilot of a Vought Crusader Fighter (F-8C) was conducting a non-combat flight over the Gulf of Tonkin when his aircraft crashed about 70 miles from Hai Non Island, North Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
