Major Winston was a member of the 16th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron. On August 1, 1967, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Voodoo Reconnaissance Fighter (RF-101C) on a mission over North Vietnam, when the aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on September 30, 1977 and identified on October 25, 1977. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
