Staff Sergeant Willing was a member of Battery D, 2nd Battalion, 13th Marines, 1st Marine Division. On July 21, 1968, he was declared missing while returning to his observation post near Da Nang in South Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
