Commander Whittemore was a member of Attack Squadron 212, Carrier Air Wing 5 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS BON HOMME RICHARD (CVA-31). On April 11, 1968, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4F) over South Vietnam when it crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
