Commander Vogt was a member of Attack Squadron 75, Carrier Air Wing 7 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS INDEPENDENCE (CVA-62). On September 18, 1965, he was the pilot of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) flying over the South China Sea, when his aircraft crashed and exploded. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
