First Lieutenant Villeponteaux was a member of the Marine Attack Squadron 311, Marine Attack Group 12, 1st Marine Air Wing. On May 11, 1966, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4E) flying over Salavan Province, Laos, when his aircraft was hit by ground fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
