Lieutenant Commander Van Renselaar, U.S. Naval Reserve, was a member of Attack Squadron 196, Carrier Air Wing 14 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS CONSTELLATION (CVA-64). On September 30, 1968, he was the pilot of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) on a night armed reconnaissance near Vinh, North Vietnam. While en-route to the target his aircraft was shot down by surface to air missiles. His remains were recovered on July 31, 1989 and identified on June 22, 1990. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
