Captain Uplinger was a member of the Marine Observation Squadron 6, Marine Air Group 36, 1st Marine Air Wing. On February 19, 1968, he was a passenger in a Sikorsky Sea Stallion Cargo Helicopter (CH-53A) over North Vietnam when it crashed into the sea. His remains were recovered on February 19, 1968. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
