Lieutenant Thompson was a member of Fighter Squadron 24, Carrier Air Wing 21 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS HANCOCK (CVA-19). On August 12, 1972, he was the pilot of a Vought Crusader Fighter (F-8J) on a flight over the Gulf of Tonkin. At a point 75 miles from Hai Nan Island, his aircraft crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
