Lieutenant Commander Sullivan was a member of Attack Squadron 86, Carrier Air Wing 8 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS AMERICA (CVA-66). On October 29, 1972, he was the pilot of a Vought Attack Aircraft Corsair II (A-7C) over Nghe An Province, North Vietnam when his aircraft was shot down in the Gulf of Tonkin. His remains were recovered on August 14, 1985 and identified on October 24, 1985. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
