Lieutenant Colonel Stewart was a member of the 35th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On May 12, 1967, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105F) on a mission near Ron, Quang Binh Province, North Vietnam, when his aircraft was shot down by hostile fire. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
