For his leadership and valor, Sergeant Stephen was awarded the Navy Cross, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Naval Unit Citation, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Sergeant Stephen was the squad leader of the 2nd Squad, 2nd Platoon, Company H, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. "Steve" was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in hand to hand combat at "Outpost Frisco" in North Korea on October 7, 1952. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
