USNA Class of 1945, Lieutenant JG Spangle was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War, he was a member of Air Transport Squadron 21, Barbers Point, Hawaii. On September 19, 1950, he was a crew member of a R5D Skymaster transporting navy nurses and others to Yokosuka, Japan in support of the Korean War. Shortly after take off from Kwajalein Atoll, the aircraft crashed killing all 26 service members on board. Lieutenant JG Spangle was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asia Clasp.
