Staff Sergeant Smoot was a member of Troop A, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On March 10, 1971, he was the door gunner of a Hughes Loach Observation Helicopter (OH-6A) on a visual reconnaissance over Kracheh Province, Cambodia near Phumi Sre Roneam. While making a low pass, the aircraft was hit by an enemy rocket, crashed and burned. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
