For his leadership and valor, Corporal Smith was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
Corporal Smith was a member of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regimental Combat Team. He was wounded by the enemy near Chinyon-ni, North Korea on June 26, 1951 and returned to duty the following day. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy at Hill 734 near Kimhwa, South Korea on July 25, 1951. His remains were recovered on June 18, 2009 and identified on May 26, 2010. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
