For his leadership and valor, Master Sergeant Smith was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

Master Sergeant Smith was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was listed as Missing in Action while delaying the massive Chinese forces along the road from Tokchon to Kunu-ri, North Korea to permit the withdrawal of the remainder of the division on November 27, 1950. He was presumed dead on January 14, 1954. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
