Lance Corporal Smith was a member of Company B, Support Battalion, 1st Marine Division. On May 1, 1967, he was being medically evacuated in a Boeing Sea Knight Cargo Helicopter (CH-46A) when it crashed at sea near South Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
