Hospital Corpsman Smith was assigned to Company H, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. He was Killed in Action at combat outpost "Vegas" in North Korea, while tending his wounded comrades on July 18, 1953 from fragment wounds to his back.
