Private Smith was a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was killed when North Korean infiltrators placed a satchel charge next to his barracks near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on May 22, 1967.
