Staff Sergeant Skarman was a member of Company L, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division. On January 15, 1968, while returning to Khe Sanh from Rest and Recuperation (R&R) at China Beach, South Vietnam, he became missing. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
