Major Silva was a member of the 354th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On January 29, 1967, he was a crewman of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105F) on a mission over North Vietnam, when his aircraft crashed. He was taken prisoner and died in captivity. His remains were recovered on November 18, 1999 and identified on February 25, 2002. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
