Commander Searfus was a member of Attack Squadron 155, Carrier Air Wing 15 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS CORAL SEA (CVA-43). On November 25, 1967, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4E) over North Vietnam when his aircraft crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
