Lieutenant Sage was a member of Fighter Squadron 144, Carrier Air Wing 5 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS BON HOMME RICHARD (CVA-31). On June 23, 1969, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4E) on a night combat mission into Laos when his aircraft was hit by ground fire, crashed and exploded. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
