Commander Saavedra was a member of Fighter Squadron 144, Carrier Air Wing 11 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS KITTY HAWK (CVA-63). On April 28, 1968, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4E) and shot down about 50 miles southeast of Vinh in Ha Tinh Province, North Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
