First Lieutenant Ryan was a member of the Marine Attack Fighter Squadron 115, Marine Air Group 13, 1st Marine Air Wing. On May 11, 1969, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4B) flying over Quang Tin, Laos, when his aircraft crashed. His remains have been recovered and identified, but his name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
