For his leadership and valor, Master Sergeant Riess was awarded the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Ribbon, the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Combat Medical Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
Master Sergeant Riess was a medic with the Medical Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was mortally wounded while assisting his wounded comrades in North Korea on December 1, 1950 and died of those wounds later that day. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
