Lieutenant Rider was the pilot of a F4U-4 Corsair fighter with Fighter Squadron 114 (884) aboard carrier USS KEARSARGE (CVA-33). On November 1, 1952, he was diving to strike enemy positions in support of front lines troops near Chun-chon, North Korea, when his aircraft was struck by anti-aircraft fire and crashed. He was presumed dead on June 9, 1954. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
