Lieutenant Colonel Pietsch was a member of the 609th Air Commando Squadron. On April 30, 1968, he was the pilot of a Douglas Counter Invader Attack Aircraft (A-26A) on a mission about 10 miles east of Ban Muong Sen, Savannakhet Province, Laos, when it was shot down by hostile fire. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. LTC Pietsch's remains have been recovered and identified.
