For his leadership and valor, Captain Peiffer was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Captain Peiffer served as an air-ground controller aboard an AT-6D Mosquito observation aircraft with the 6148th Tactical Air Control Squadron for Company K, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On September 17, 1950, his aircraft became lost in the Pohang-Kigye Angang-ni area. He was presumed dead on March 16, 1954. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
