Lieutenant Commander Patterson was a member of Attack Squadron 35, Carrier Air Wing 9 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS ENTERPRISE (CVAN-65). On May 19, 1967, he was the co-pilot of in a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) on a mission to bomb a truck repair facility at Van Dien, Hai Duong Province, North Vietnam when the aircraft was shot down. He parachuted safely to the ground and contact was lost. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
