Captain Partington was a member of the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, Marine Attack Group 16, 1st Marine Air Wing. On November 1, 1969, he was flying in a Sikorsky Sea Stallion Cargo Helicopter (CH-53A) when it crashed into the South China Sea southeast of Danang, South Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
