Lieutenant Colonel Panek was a member of the 354th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Takhli Air Base, Thailand. On January 28, 1970, he was the electronics warfare officer of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105G) was sent as an escort to a reconnaissance aircraft on a mission about 20 miles northeast of Mu Gia Pass, North Vietnam, where his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on December 15, 1988 and identified on May 4, 1989. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
