Commander Olmstead was a member of Fighter Squadron 84, Carrier Air Wing 7 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS INDEPENDENCE (CVA-62). On October 17, 1965, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4B) on a mission near the city of Thai Nguyen, North Vietnam when his aircraft was shot down. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
