Staff Sergeant Newton was a member of Troop C, 7th Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment. On January 9, 1968, he was the door gunner of a Bell Huey Utility Helicopter (UH-1C) on a cover mission about 20 miles west of Tam Ky, Quang Tin Province, South Vietnam. His aircraft was hit by ground fire, crashed and exploded. The remains of SSGT Newton have been recovered and identified in 2015. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
