Sergeant Nelson was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
Notes
Sergeant Nelson was an Browning Automatic Rifleman in Company A, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. On December 1, 1950, his company was delaying the overwhelming Chinese forces at the Chosin Reservoir, North Korea to permit the withdrawal of Task Force MacLean-Faith. He was killed by enemy fire while firing anti-tank missiles at the enemy. His remains were not recovered.
