Lieutenant Commander Mossman was a member of Attack Squadron 52, Carrier Air Wing 11 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS KITTY HAWK (CVA-63). On August 20, 1972, he was the bombardier/navigator of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) on a night armed reconnaissance near Cam Pha, North Vietnam when his aircraft was hit by ground fire and crashed near Hanoi. His remains were recovered on January 15, 2004 and identified on May 4, 2004. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
