Commander Mongilardi was a member of Carrier Air Wing 15 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS CORAL SEA (CVA-43). On June 25, 1965, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4C) on a combat mission in the Thanh Hoa area of North Vietnam when his aircraft was shot down. His remains were recovered on April 13, 1994 and identified on August 25, 2006. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
