Lieutenant Commander Mitchell, U.S. Naval Reserve, was a member of Attack Squadron 75, Carrier Air Wing 11 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS KITTY HAWK (CVA-63). On March 6, 1968, he was the co-pilot of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) on a combat mission over North Vietnam when his aircraft was shot down. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
