Cmdr. James. B. Mills, U.S. Naval Reserve, was a member of Fighter Squadron 21, Carrier Air Wing 2 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS CORAL SEA (CVA-43). On September 21, 1966, he was the co-pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4B) on an armed reconnaissance mission over North Vietnam along route 1A from Cua Can to Thach Luyen, when contact with the aircraft was lost. His remains were not recovered at the time. Through the work of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, the remains of Cmdr. Mills were accounted for in 2018. His name is permanently inscribed in the “Courts of the Missing” at the Honolulu Memorial.
