Lieutenant Colonel Miller was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War, he was the Director of Operations, 42nd Air Division, Bergstrom Air Force Base, Texas. He volunteered for combat and was placed on temporary duty with the 27th Fighter Escort Wing. On June 16, 1951, he was leading a flight of four F-84 Thunderjets and attacked Sinmak Marshalling Yard. His plane was shot down and his body was not recovered for four years.
