Captain McVey was a member of Company C, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division. On March 2, 1970, he was killed by the enemy while trying to rescue a fallen comrade in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
