Sergeant First Class May was a member of Company L, 3rd Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. He was wounded in South Korea on May 25, 1951 and returned to duty on June 12, 1951. He was listed as Missing in Action while defending his position on Hill 851, Heartbreak Ridge, North Korea against superior Chinese forces on September 2, 1951. He was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
