Chief Boatswain's Mate Massey was a veteran of World War II. During the Korean War he was the acting Officer-in-Charge of the Overfalls Lightship Station (WAL-524) off Lewes, Delaware. On the afternoon of January 8, 1951, he disappeared and is believed to have fallen overboard and drowned.
