Commander Mape was a member of Attack Squadron 52, Carrier Air Wing 5 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS TICONDEROGA (CVA-14). On April 13, 1966, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Skyraider (A-1H) over North Vietnam when his aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on January 16, 1998 and identified on February 19, 1999. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
