Hospital Corpsman Manning was assigned to Headquarters and Service Company, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. On May 15, 1975, he was a passenger a Sikorsky Sea Stallion Cargo Helicopter (CH-53) in an attempt to rescue American merchant marines captured on Koh Tang Island, Cambodia when the helicopter was shot down. His remains were recovered on December 6, 1995 and identified on June 22, 2000. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
