Major Lundy was a member of the 1st Special Operations Squadron, 56th Special Operations Wing, Nakohon Phanom, Thailand. On December 24, 1970, he was the pilot of a Douglas Skyraider Attack Aircraft (A1-E) on a voluntary rescue escort mission in the northeast corner of the heavily defended Ban Ban Valley, Laos. His aircraft was hit by hostile fire and he tried to eject, but was unsuccessful. His remains were recovered on October 27, 1997 and identified on March 26, 2002. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
