Commander Lindland was a member of Attack Squadron 75, Carrier Air Wing 3 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS SARATOGA (CV-60). On September 6, 1972, he was the pilot of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) on a combat mission over Haiphong, North Vietnam when his aircraft was shot down. He ejected safely, but was declared missing. His remains were recovered on June 3, 1983 and identified on June 27, 1983. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
